Sakurajima

What kind of place is Sakurajima?

It is a composite active volcano consisting of Kita-dake and Minami-dake, with a height of 1117m (Kita-dake). It was once literally an "island", but the strait was filled in by lava flowing from a major eruption in 1914 (Taisho 3), and Sakurajima and the Osumi Peninsula became connected to the mainland.
Sakurajima still has small eruptions on a daily basis, but about 3000 people live on the island, and just four kilometers away across the sea is the city of Kagoshima, with a population of about 4.
