Sakurajima: 110 years since the Taisho eruption
January 2024, 6 (Reiwa 1) marks exactly 12 years since the Great Taisho eruption of Sakurajima in 1914 (Taisho 3).
Sakurajima stands almost in the center of Kinko Bay (Kagoshima Bay) and can be seen from all over Kagoshima Prefecture. Its imposing presence, which the famous TV personality "Saigo Don" must have seen countless times, is truly the symbol of Kagoshima.
Sakurajima occasionally shows its teeth in the form of eruptions and ashfall, but the greatest threat from nature is the great Taisho eruption 110 years ago.
The lava that flowed from this massive eruption filled the entire strait, connecting Sakurajima and the Osumi Peninsula.
Sakurajima still erupts on a daily basis, but about 3000 people live on the island, and just 4km away across the sea is the city of Kagoshima, with a population of about 60. A city located so close to a volcano is apparently rare around the world.
One of the most famous examples of damage caused by the Taisho eruption is the "Kurokami Buried Torii" in the Kurokami area. The 3m-tall torii was buried under volcanic ash and pumice, leaving only the upper part, and has been left unexcavated to convey the threat of the eruption to future generations.
There are many things to see on Sakurajima Island, including the Kurokami Buried Torii, the Sakurajima Lava Nagisa Park Footbath, the Yunohira Observatory, and the Scream Portrait monument built to commemorate Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi's all-night concert. Sakurajima is also beautiful when viewed across Kinko Bay, but if you visit Kagoshima City, why not cross over to Sakurajima as well?
From downtown Kagoshima, you can reach Sakurajima in about 15 minutes by taking the Sakurajima Ferry. You can enjoy a casual short boat trip and experience the majestic Sakurajima.
